The New Orleans Saints Are Super Bowl Champions!
2/8/2010 2:42:47 AM
Pigs can fly and hell has frozen over. Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints have won the Super Bowl, beating Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. Does anyone remember my Fearless Predictions for 2010? The New Orleans Saints are now considered the Best of the Best. This is more than just football, folks. This was a show of determination, faith, and the will to succeed for not only yourself, but for your city that you love and it's people, as well.

The psychic of the city of New Orleans has been bruised since Hurricane Katrina crushed the city, leaving thousands homeless. For three hours every Sunday people would forget their worries and concerns, and cheer on their beloved team. Before the big game, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was asked about the psychic of this city, and why the people are so tied up with this team. His answer was priceless, and right on the money, if you ask me. Mayor Nagin said, "Think about losing everything. The city that you love, your home, relatives may have perished. The only thing we had to really hold on to was the New Orleans Saints, and that gave us something else to focus on other than our misery. And that's why I think it was psychological salve for our wounds." The Saints became a homeless team, but they fought their way back, and are honored tonight for all of their hard work.

Robert Lynn Green, Sr., President of The Historic Lower Ninth Ward Neighborhood Association, said, "The Saints are just like us. We lost my mother and we lost my granddaughter, and we can't hold onto the past, because that's God, and nothing can be done about it. What happened to the Saints prior to this year doesn't matter. The Saints' future is going to be great just like our future is going to be great."

Actor Brad Pitt and his Make It Right Organization, which is committed to making 225 energy efficient homes in the Ninth Ward neighborhood for displaced owners has dedicated himself to helping rebuild the old city. If the Saints can become champions in the NFL, they, the people of New Orleans, too, can become champions in Life.

Rick Reilly, an award-winning columnist, summed it up beautifully on ESPN Sunday night:  When he was growing up, Catholics had to memorize the names of the Saints. But now, the people of New Orleans will know these saints by heart:  Saint Drew, Patron Saint of the Little Guy; Saint Sean, Patron Saint of Courage, and mostly Saint Tracy, Patron Saint of Miracles. There are many people who believed that this team would one day make it to the Super Bowl. They showed faith in the team that carried a people through many difficult times.

In New Orleans, it is realized that anything is possible. A team that was without a home has given a people who have lost their homes a reason to celebrate, hope and believe. Not just for now, but for the long haul. The Saints have a rapport with the people of their city that I don't think is matched by any other team. This is their home. This New Orleans Saints team is a new, fresh team with a young coach. They're going to be a dominating force for years to come. There is much to celebrate. Congratulations, Coach Sean Payton and New Orleans Saints, and "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez," which is French for, "Let The Good Times Roll!

Thank you, RBG. I have been a Saints fan for many years. When my children were young I would save enough money so we could take in a couple of games a season. I would purchase the cheapest seats, and then we'd sit on the 45 or 50 yard line on Row 1, 2 or 3. It was so easy, because the stadium wasn't even half filled. Ushers helped you find the best seat; they didn't care. They were just glad you were there! Even though we'd laugh at the people with paper bags on their heads, we never wore them ourselves. I considered it disrespectful, I guess. But it was funny.

Now, it's next to impossible to go to a game because the tickets are scarce, and if you are lucky enough to obtain a ticket, it's going to cost you dearly. I watch the games from home now, and love the team more than ever. Brees exemplifies what a man should be. A man dedicated to God, to his family and an amazing work ethic. He is an excellent quarterback, a number one captain and encourages the other players to get involved in their community and give back. He doesn't take his success for granted and remembers his roots. Louisiana is very, very lucky to have him.
